10 overwater villas in the Maldives worth every penny
Glass floors, private plunge pools and breakfast delivered by canoe. These are the overwater villas that live up to the photos, and how to choose between them.
There is a moment on your first morning in an overwater villa when you open the doors and the lagoon is right there: clear, warm and so still you can watch reef fish drift past the steps. It is the reason people fly halfway around the world, and it is worth getting right. Not every villa on stilts is equal, so we looked at space, privacy, the reef below and the little things that make a stay memorable.
What makes an overwater villa worth it
The best villas face the sunset or the open ocean rather than the next villa along the jetty. Look for direct lagoon access by a private ladder, a deck big enough for two loungers in the shade, and a bathroom with a view. Glass floor panels are fun for a night; a healthy house reef under the villa is what you will actually remember.
Our ten favourites, from barefoot to blow-out
Our list runs from simple thatched villas with a hammock over the water to two-bedroom residences with a slide into the lagoon. At the value end, choose an atoll close to Malé so you can arrive by speedboat instead of seaplane and save on transfers. At the top end, the difference is service: a host who knows how you like your coffee and when the manta rays are passing.
“We stopped setting an alarm on day two. The light through the shutters and the sound of the water did it for us.”
When to go
The dry season runs from December to April, with the calmest seas and the highest prices. May to November brings short tropical showers, better rates and the best chance of seeing whale sharks in the south. Shoulder weeks in late April and early November are a sweet spot.
- Transfers — Check whether the seaplane or speedboat is included and when the last one leaves.
- Meal plan — Half board is usually the best value on a private island with no nearby restaurants.
- House reef — Ask how far the reef is from your villa steps; it matters more than a glass floor.
- Orientation — Sunset-facing villas are popular for a reason; request one early.
